Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my first love, my first fandom. I've loved other shows since then (Supernatural, Lost, Heroes), I've been in other fandoms (Life on Mars, Torchwood, Doctor Who), I've shipped other pairings, canon and non (Doctor/Rose, Jack/Gwen/Rhys) but until Prison Break and Michael/Alex, I haven't shipped a pairing so very, very hard since Buffy/Spike. It made me start thinking about whether there are parallels, and whether I have a Type. I think it's possible :-)

Title: Lies & Happy Endings
Author: Flurblewig
Pairing: Michael/Alex; Michael/Alex/Sara
Rating: PG
Timeline/Spoilers: Set after 4.06 'Blow Out'
Length: 2,063 words
Disclaimer: Not mine. We all know that.
A/N: This had two inspirations.  The first was one of my favourite Buffy quotes, from the episode 'Lie to Me.'  The second was [info]isagel 's notes for her story Both.  She said: 'There were two ways I could go with this, fantasy or canon-compatible.'  Finding myself in a similar position, I concurred with the title of the fic and went for both :-)  So in the same way that we often make more than one icon from a single cap, I present one scene, two fics, two different colours.

Unbeta'd, crit welcome.

Buffy: Does it ever get easy?
Giles: You mean life?
Buffy: Yeah, does it get easy?
Giles: What do you want me to say?
Buffy: Lie to me.
Giles: Yes. It's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and... everybody lives happily ever after.
Buffy: Liar.

27th-Sep-2008 10:02 pm - Ah, fandom
I miss fandom. I love writing original fic, I love my novel (even if I privately despair of ever getting to the point where I can call it finished) but I miss fic. I miss writing about characters I already know, characters that I don't have explain. I like creating but I'm not quite so sure I like inventing. I miss finishing things, I miss feedback, I miss the feeling that I'm writing *for* something--to fufill a request, to make a point, to refute a point, to please, to agree, to squee, to say 'hey, it could happen.' I miss feeling like a part of something.

In a strange way I miss being... um, I don't know if there's a word. Singularly devoted perhaps comes closest to espressing it. My first obsession was BtVS as a show, Buffy as a character, Buffy/Spike as a pairing. Then I discovered proper fandom, and I read one of gwynnega's Willow/Giles stories and I realised you didn't have to have just one love. I expanded my heart and loved Buffy/Spike and Spike/Anya and Spike/Angel and Buffy/Gunn and Angel/Spike/Nina and Faith/Owen and Dawn/Justine and Angel/Snyder (and yeah, I actually wrote that :-)

And then there was the new Doctor Who, and I found there was even more love in my heart. And House/Chase found further space, and then Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt stole what was left, but actually no they didn't, because then there was Torchwood and Jack, oh Jack, with Ten and Owen and Gwen and Rhys and Ianto and hell, just about anybody. And Donna, Donna who I loved from the start and who ended by allowing me a spectacular 'I told you so' through my tears.

And that's not counting the awesomeness of Sam and Dean Winchester, the kick-ass-ness of River Tam, the terrifying wonderfulness of Dexter Morgan, the fascinating complexity of Nathan Petrelli.

And then there was Die Hard 4.0, and I registered there was such a thing as movie fandom, and oh dear god, the Matt/John. And my latest love, my latest passion, Prison Break.

Evolution Of An Obsession:

1. Start of S1: Mr Flurble watches, says hey, this is good. I say huh, yeah, wasn't really paying attention, not sure what's going on, it looks a bit complicated to get into, you carry on.

2. Mid-way through S1: hmm, this guy's a bit pretty, who's this? Oh, the star? Right, okay, so what's it about?

3. S2: This isn't bad really, bit implausible but fun, and whoa, actually this new dude is pretty good, this Mahone guy. Good actor, interesting character, not bad on the eyes, maybe I'll pay a bit more attention.

4. S3: Dear god, Michael/Mahone is the single hottest thing this side of a supernova

5. After watching sdwolfpup's Like A Stone vid: Ok, I give in, buy me a ticket to OTP world, I'm sold.

I love my show, but damn, I'd forgotton the sweet agony of having an OTP--especially one that's never going to happen in canon. I like Michael/Sara, it's sweet and affectionate, but they could have full sex on screen and it wouldn't generate a fiftieth of the electricity raised by Michael and Alex simply getting within five feet of each other and saying 'hey'. I love my show, and I love the wacky Mission Impossible storyline more than I can describe, but most of all I love my intense, psychologically-attuned, hotter-than-the-fires-of-hell, never-going-to-happen OTP.

Ah, fandom.

Fic for spikendru's Buffyverse Cross-Fandom Ficathon. My assigned character was Ripper, and my original choice of fandom to cross was Life On Mars. However, it got a bit out of hand and I ended up with Torchwood, Doctor Who and AtS as well :-)

My beta hasn't seen TW/DW yet, so if anyone out there would be willing to check over those chapters, please let me know.

Happy Buffyversary, everyone! Squees and smooches all round!

2nd-Mar-2007 02:59 pm - Cross-fandom wondering....
If Rose Tyler was a Buffy fan, who do you think she would ship?

Imagine you're a 37 year old English man who has never seen Buffy. Presumably the show is famous enough for you to be aware of that name by sheer osmosis, but what about other characters? Particularly Giles? Would you be likely to be aware of the name Rupert Giles and would you make the connection?

19th-Feb-2007 08:06 pm - Fun with crossovers
Happy birthday to constance_b!

So if someone was writing a crazy-ass five-way crossover for Buffy/Angel/Torchwood/Dr Who/Life On Mars, which out of the pairing possibilities that offers would you most like to see?
donna by lindenharp
19th-Jan-2007 06:30 pm - Crossover crackfic
I have my assignment for the Buffyverse Cross-Fandom Ficathon, and it's fantastically perfect and slots instantly into the LOM/BtVS plot bunny I've had for a while now. And I'm pondering it, and thinking about time-travellers colliding, and you can't do that without thinking about the Doctor, obviously.

Then I work a bit more on the Rhys/Jack I've been playing with, and they start wanting in on the action, and it ends up wanting to be a gigantic Life On Mars/BtVS/AtS//Doctor Who/Torchwood story where Ethan gets away from the Initiative by going back in time to the good old days with Ripper in 1973, but the spell gets caught in an opening of the Rift and fractures, catching up poor old DCI Sam Tyler in it as well. All this gets the attention of the Doctor, who has to go and sort it all out, and ends up taking Rhys and Jack with him. And the Creepy Test Card Girl is really the Conduit to the Senior Partners, who's got her own agenda to prevent the Slayer-sharing by having Sam & Gene arrest Ripper and stop him becoming Giles. And they all end up going through the White Room to Wolfram & Hart during AtS S5, and much wackiness and unfeasible pairings ensue until they recapture Ethan, send Sam home (with Gene) and stop Spike from trying to steal the TARDIS. And Jack takes over the Initiative, and Willow, Giles & Andrew join Torchwood, and Buffy becomes Ten's next Companion, and everybody lives happily ever after.

So If I were to actually try and write something like that I'd be certifiably insane, right?
donna by lindenharp
16th-Jan-2007 08:27 pm - Brain-picking required
In AtS S5, at what point did the Conduit change from the little girl to the panther? Was there a point when she disappeared and the White Room was empty? Or was it that the whole White Room disappeared?

For Americans: if asked to sing a pop song that an English person would be sure to recognise, what would you choose? ETA: Something released from the late 70s onwards.

ETA2: Did we ever hear of any family for the Mayor other than Edna Mae? Any word as to whether he did/could have children?
donna by lindenharp
10th-Jan-2007 09:59 pm - Crossover love!
How cool is this? For all who've expanded (not 'moved on', heh) fannishly, the Buffyverse Cross-fandom Ficathon! You pick your new fandom and get assigned a Buffyverse character to cross with. Irresistable! Go now, signups are closing today!

I also caught up with Torchwood and find myself unexpectedly obsessed. After being pretty take-it-or-leave-it for most of the season, I suddenly fell in love around Weevil Fight Club Combat and was reduced to a small quivering pile of squee by the finale. I really, really want a 'Buffy/Jack bonding over Post-Resurrection Issues' fic.

Yeah, so the retirement from fandom is going well... :-)

Title: Negative Space
Fandom: Life On Mars
Author: Flurblewig
Pairing: Annie/Gene
Rating: PG13

Disclaimer: Not mine. We all know that.

Writing a novel is great fun, but sometimes I miss having a thought and being able to say it in 1,000 words :-) Also indulging my love of rare pairings--it's a bit harder to go outside canon in your own original fic, heh.

19th-Dec-2006 10:35 pm - Is this thing on?
::peers around, blinking::

So, wow, like, LJ is still here, right?

I did a bit of a cold turkey thing so that I could finally get some time in on my novel, and then there was the whole inertia thing, and before I knew it a whole big squodge of time had gone past. I just realised people were wondering what was up, so thought I'd better pop in and confirm, in best Granny Weatherwax style, that I Aiten't Dead :-)

The novel is going well, with first draft done and second underway. After a lot of reviewing and cutting and rearranging, I realised that what I actually have, fundamentally, is a Buffy/Spike story :-)

Hope all you guys are doing well and having fun!

5th-Mar-2006 07:39 pm - Assistance with fic question
Fictional scenario:

You're a man. Your sister was attacked by a would-be rapist. He got scared away fairly quickly, leaving her unmolested but with a split lip and a two-inch knife cut under her jawline. She says she's fine, she just wants to be left alone for a while. She doesn't come in to work (she works for you), she doesn't answer the phone or ring back when you leave a message. She responds to emails occasionally, but doesn't make a lot of sense. How long do you wait before you go round and sit on her doorstep until she lets you in?

Related: your other sister is a counsellor, skilled in handling exactly this kind of situation, but the two really don't get on. You know Sis 1 won't want Sis 2 involved - would you bring her in anyway? How bad would Sis1 have to be before you'd do it?

donna by lindenharp
23rd-Feb-2006 09:25 pm - Epiphany
I was just over at chrisleeoctaves joining in the general pondering-about-writing. One of the questions was 'What are your strengths and weaknesses as a writer?' and I said:

Strengths: I'm most often praised for voice and characterisation. I write dialogue well. I'm flexible and adventurous in what I'll tackle, pairing or genre-wise, and I always keep the audience in mind - I take care over making a story accessible and entertaining.

Weaknesses: Setting and description. This is skimpy and basic, when it exists at all. I think it comes from the fact that it's what I value least when I'm reading - I often skim the sensory details because I'm so much more interested in the what and who and why than the where :-) I also suffer from 'finish-line fever' and often rush things, endings particularly. I condense too much sometimes, when a fuller exploration would make a richer story.

And it suddenly hit me, why I have issues with longfic and why I do the rush/condense thing: my absolute, ultimate, fear-to-end-all-fears is of being *boring*. My audience is very, very important to me - I write to get a reaction, to have an effect; whether that's to entertain, amuse or break hearts. Tell me you hated my fic and I can live with that (especially if you tell me why). Tell me you got bored and couldn't finish it, and I'll be *devastated*. I honestly can't think of a worse thing anyone could say to me. I'm so terrified of being boring that I don't want to take the risk of getting a fic into a situation where that could happen. I'd rather be told I didn't fully explore something than I let it drag on interminably or got repetitive, *any* day.

Hmmm. Not quite sure how I go about resolving it, but at least now I understand it. That's got to be progress, right?
donna by lindenharp
22nd-Feb-2006 11:12 pm - Pondering quality
What would you say was the best fic you've ever read? - In terms of sheer quality of writing, rather than enjoyability or kink-hitting or anything like that.

Any pairing, genre or fandom.
